BIRTH: Kent Co, DE Will Rec. proves her father was William Bowman and her mother Mary, possibly Mary Reed although some say she was a Bowman also. She could not have been the daughter of Henry Bowman as stated in some sources [see note re newspaper article, below, and complete article under Jethro New.] Perhaps she was a granddaughter of Henry. An article in "Colonial Families of America" Vol. VIII, p. 321, 1931, states that she was the dau of George and Mary (Hite) Bowman. This is incorrect according to the will record. NOTE:Some researchers says her mother was Mary DeWeese. This would explain the use of the name DeWeese, DeWisse, etc., throughout the various families. See Grant Co, KY News article under Amelia Bowman. HISTORY: Transcription of a photo-copied newspaper article in poss. of David G.Christian of Adelphi, NC. Sent to me by Mrs. Lynn Livenick of Hickory Hills, IL. in Mar of 1984. The article was in a genealogy column--no date or name of newspaper is given. It is very faded and some of the words and dates difficult to read. "273. New--Jethro (350) Data taken from autobiography written by my grandfather, John B. New, son of Jethro New, in 1862 ten years before his death, for a book entitled "Pioneer Preachers of Indiana." . . . . Jethro New married Sarah Bowman, who was born in Kent county, Delaware, May 15, 1764, daughter of Henry [sic] Bowman, prominent in Sussex and Kent counties. In the province of Pennsylvania, he was a large land owner, a member of the Assembly under William Penn's government, 1683-1687 [sic]. One of Sarah Bowman's brothers was with George Rogers Clark's expedition. [NOTE:See "A Roster of the Lewis and Clark Expedition," online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~genepool/lewiclar. htm. This makes no mention of a Bowman in the Expedition. The only mention is of one of the members who was the "bowman" for the group, and his name was Pierre Cruzatte. However, the web site states that "a true roster can never be learned."]
