She was living in Plainfield, IL in 1953. NOTE:From personal knowledge and records of Keith Kingman, via email, May 2005. "When I was about 9 years old my mother commissioned a painting of Sophronia Harrod Garriott by Esther Harrod who was Eliza's daughter, and Sophronia's first cousin. I do not know how my mother discovered Esther or that she was a painter. Probably from William Anthony with whom my mother corresponded. "Esther lived in Plainfield, Illinois at the time, near Hannibal, Missouri. We drove to her house from San Pierre, Indiana where we lived and brought Esther back to spend about a week with us. Her little house fascinated me as it seemed as if she painted every surface she could. Murals on the walls and ceilings, the mail box, everything. I enjoyed her immensely. The next year she painted another picture of a winter scene. My brother owns that painting and I own the portrait. The portrait is very dear to me and I will pass it on to my niece." HISTORY: From notes of Beverly Williams Long posted at www.gencircles.com/ users/ blong/1/index/14. Robert Allen New was the first Secretary of State in Indiana when the old capital was in Corydon. Robert Allen New died, June 20, 1856, in Jefferson County, and was buried in Hebron Cemetery, Jefferson County, Indiana. He is buried on lot about 50 feet south of last tree on North side of road, and about fifteen feet southeast of monument of James E. Henry lot. The tombstone has the following inscription: Robert New Born:January 20, 1787 [CONFLICT:She has 1789 on family chart; which is right?] Died:June 20, 1856. Other grave to his right on said lot has a tombstone with the following inscription: Margaret New Daughter R & S New Born August 18, 1787- Died March 17, 1856 [CONFLICT:This cannot be Robert's dau as she was born the same year he was born!] Susannah Taylor New, wife of Robert Allen New, is buried on his left but has no grave stone. She was the daughter of Joseph Taylor, A Revolutionary Soldier, and Susan Wooden Taylor. They are buried at Woodfill [sic] Cemetery. The article was in a genealogy column--no date or name of newspaper is given. It is very faded and some of the words and dates difficult to read. "273. New--Jethro (350) Data taken from autobiography written by my grandfather, John B. New, son of Jethro New, in 1862 ten years before his death, for a book entitled "Pioneer Preachers of Indiana." He states his father, Jethro New, was born in Kent county, Delaware, Sept. 20, 1757, and died at home of his son, John New, in Vernon, Ind., in 1827. Jethro New migrated to Kentucky in the fall of 1794. He first settled at a place called "Dry Run" in Franklin county, where he resided for five years, owning later a farm of 300 acres near where the town of New Liberty, KY is (?) now standing. He was a prosperous man for his time, but left Kentucky for Indiana because of slavery, and would not continue to live in a slave state. He had twelve children: William, married Susan Baker; Robert, married Susan Taylor; John Bowman, married Marie Chalfant, Dec. 19, 1818; George Washington, died 18?? (possibly 1825 but more probably 1814 in severe epidemic) unmarried; James, married 1) Eliza Tarbet, 2) Hulda Stoll; Jeptha, unmarried; Hickman, married Samira Anne Smythe; Mary, married Nathan Baker; Elizabeth, married William Harrod; Amelia, married John Sipple; Sarah--Lowe or Brackett; Nancy, married Thomas Cochran. Jethro New married Sarah Bowman, who was born in Kent county, Delaware, May 15, 1764, daughter of Henry [sic] Bowman, prominent in Sussex and Kent counties. In the province of Pennsylvania, he was a large land owner, a member of the Assembly under William Penn's government, 1683-1687 [sic]. One of Sarah Bowman's brothers was with George Rogers Clark's expedition. Jethro New's father was Henry [sic] New, lived in Kent county, Delaware, where Jethro was born. We have no knowledge of him other than his name. Jethro served in the Revolution in Capt. Richard Dollivers (?) company, 2d Delaware regiment; Col. Henry Neill or O'Neill. "When I was about 9 years old my mother commissioned a painting of Sophronia Harrod Garriott by Esther Harrod who was Eliza's daughter, and Sophronia's first cousin. I do not know how my mother discovered Esther or that she was a painter. Probably from William Anthony with whom my mother corresponded.

"Esther lived in Plainfield, Illinois at the time, near Hannibal, Missouri. We drove to her house from San Pierre, Indiana where we lived and brought Esther back to spend about a week with us. Her little house fascinated me as it seemed as if she painted every surface she could. Murals on the walls and ceilings, the mail box, everything. I enjoyed her immensely. The next year she painted another picture of a winter scene. My brother owns that painting and I own the portrait. The portrait is very dear to me and I will pass it on to my niece."

HISTORY: From notes of Beverly Williams Long posted at www.gencircles.com/ users/ blong/1/index/14. Robert Allen New was the first Secretary of State in Indiana when the old capital was in Corydon. Robert Allen New died, June 20, 1856, in Jefferson County, and was buried in Hebron Cemetery, Jefferson County, Indiana. He is buried on lot about 50 feet south of last tree on North side of road, and about fifteen feet southeast of monument of James E. Henry lot. The tombstone has the following inscription: Robert New Born:January 20, 1787 [CONFLICT:She has 1789 on family chart; which is right?] Died:June 20, 1856. Other grave to his right on said lot has a tombstone with the following inscription: Margaret New Daughter R & S New Born August 18, 1787- Died March 17, 1856 [CONFLICT:This cannot be Robert's dau as she was born the same year he was born!] Susannah Taylor New, wife of Robert Allen New, is buried on his left but has no grave stone. She was the daughter of Joseph Taylor, A Revolutionary Soldier, and Susan Wooden Taylor. They are buried at Woodfill [sic] Cemetery. Another child might be Mary Ann New that married Thomas Hinton in Jefferson Co, IN. Other children listed by Linda Baker [ndnblu@texoma.net] are: iii. HISTORY: Transcription of a photo-copied newspaper article in possession of David G. Christian of Adelphi, NC. Sent to me by Mrs. Lynn Livenick of Hickory Hills, IL. in Mar of 1984. The article was in a genealogy column--no date or name of newspaper is given. It is very faded and some of the words and dates difficult to read. "273. New--Jethro (350) Data taken from autobiography written by my grandfather, John B. New, son of Jethro New, in 1862 ten years before his death, for a book entitled "Pioneer Preachers of Indiana." He states his father, Jethro New, was born in Kent county, Delaware, Sept. 20, 1757, and died at home of his son, John New, in Vernon, Ind., in 1827. Jethro New migrated to Kentucky in the fall of 1794. He first settled at a place called "Dry Run" in Franklin county, where he resided for five years, owning later a farm of 300 acres near where the town of New Liberty, KY is (?) now standing. He was a prosperous man for his time, but left Kentucky for Indiana because of slavery, and would not continue to live in a slave state. He had twelve children: William, married Susan Baker; Robert, married Susan Taylor; John Bowman, married Marie Chalfant, Dec. 19, 1818; George Washington, died 18?? (possibly 1825 but more probably 1814 in severe epidemic) unmarried; James, married 1) Eliza Tarbet, 2) Hulda Stoll; Jeptha, unmarried; Hickman, married Samira Anne Smythe; Mary, married Nathan Baker; Elizabeth, married William Harrod; Amelia, married John Sipple; Sarah--Lowe or Brackett; Nancy, married Thomas Cochran. Jethro New married Sarah Bowman, who was born in Kent county, Delaware, May 15, 1764, daughter of Henry [sic] Bowman, prominent in Sussex and Kent counties. In the province of Pennsylvania, he was a large land owner, a member of the Assembly under William Penn's government, 1683-1687 [sic]. One of Sarah Bowman's brothers was with George Rogers Clark's expedition. Jethro New's father was Henry [sic] New, lived in Kent county, Delaware, where Jethro was born. We have no knowledge of him other than his name.

Sipple as legatees of Wm. New dec'd; Mentions a deed of relinquishment from John Scott; mentions H. B. Sipple as guardian of B. and B.W. New; mentions a payment to Roland Sutton for 'land that was lost.' Dated 24 Jan 1831.

LETTER:
From Huldah to her "bro and sister" [unnamed]. This letter tells of the death of James B. Diemer. It was sent to Bernadine Murrow Terril in May of 1974 by Hazel Dell Franklin Babbitt, Avoca, IA, wife of Oliver Glenn Babbitt who was the son of Hugh and Azubia Babbitt. Since it was in the possession of Hugh's son, it is probable that Huldah was writing to them. It is likely that Hugh and Azubia's "trouble" to which Huldah refers was the death of one of their children, possibly Bertha. [See under Hugh Babbitt.]
